Palos Monastery

A memorial site was created on the site of the Palos Monastery of Armenia, which once operated in today's Zalacsány area, near the Pálos Resort building, in a beautiful natural environment. The memorial site was handed over on May 27, 2017.

The history of the Armenian Monastery is known from an authentic source from 1378, when the Armenian Sage exchanged Elek for another estate. However, it could have been founded earlier, perhaps at the end of the 13th century. After 1378, the history of the monastery can be followed continuously until the end of the 14th century. Between 1388-1503, it grew with such significant property donations that it became one of the best-supplied monasteries of the order. Kegyura has always been the Kanizsai family. Moreover, according to the Documenta artis Paulinorum, the Armenian monastery named after this Blessed Virgin was also founded by this Kanizsa family before 1378. Its first inhabitants probably moved from the Elek-Szigete monastery.

Today, the location of the monastery ... is only considered by tradition, which locates it on the pasture opposite the last house of the village. There is a larger depression in the surroundings of the bushy area here, as this is where stones were last mined for the construction of the village's houses. Mortar and brick debris stand out in several places under the thin topsoil. Remains of a wall or wall space can no longer be recognized.
